Regent Park Sewing Studio (RPSS)

The Regent Park Sewing Studio (RPSS), launched in 2015, is a social enterprise of a group of women sewing and designing products, selling products and sharing their knowledge with the community through community classes and repair clinics. The initiative aims to teach skills which will lead to employment for its members and program graduates.

RPSS members are skilled sewists who design products, sell items online and at community markets, complete custom orders and run their own sewing businesses. Multiple RPSS members and graduates have also gone on to take advanced industrial classes at nearby George Brown College, which in turn offer internships at fashion studios and the potential for long-term employment relationships.

During COVID, the members of RPSS were busy making masks from their new home sewing studios due to physical distancing. Throughout 2020, members made approximately 9,000 masks, of which 6,000 masks were donated to the local community. The masks became the launching point to other products that the Sewing Studio created to sell. Other products include eyeglass cases, bags, laptop cases, fabric coffee filters, and upcycling worn garments to create new ones.

Community programming run by RPSS includes:

  • Beginner Sewing Classes – Free six-week long classes in which students learn sewing skills and complete their own sewing project. All materials and sewing machines are provided.
  • Intermediate Sewing Classes – Free six-week long classes for those with foundational sewing skills. Participants complete a sewing project by the end of the classes. All materials and sewing machines are provided
  • Repair Clinic – Drop off clothing items that need to be fixed or altered and Sewing Studio members will complete your alteration or repair for an affordable price!

Sewing classes and repair clinics run multiple times throughout the year. Stay tuned on our website and social media for updates on next sessions!
